KIDS DAY AT THE MARKET
Kids of all ages can come to the Market to learn from our Farmers, meet a live farm animal, bring home a book, and so much more!
Bring your little ones and participate in all that Kid’s Day has to offer – activities start at 9 am:
Baby Lambs from Brittingham Farms
Face Painting
Scavenger Hunt with Prizes
Take Home Crafts
Farm Truck Photo Booth
Hands-On Food Activity
Ice Cream Treats from The Frozen Farmer
$10 of Market Bonus Bucks for SNAP Customers with Kids
Be sure to pick up a special Kid’s Day Activities Map from an HLFM Volunteer when you enter the Market! All kids and their adults should start at the Kid’s Tent to join the Market Scavenger Hunt, pick up their free ticket to pet baby bottle lambs, and find out about all of the other Kid’s Day events. Starting at 9 am, kids can make a take-home craft, get their face painted, pose at the Farm Truck photo shoot, and more! Starting at 10 am, there will be hands-on fruit and veggie skewer activities and a very special Children’s Storytime at the Yellow Tent. And yes—for the first time—the Market will have two bottle lambs from Brittingham Farms for kids to pet! Children need to be calm and gentle around the lambs and should wash their hands afterwards. Kids accompanied by an adult with a SNAP card will receive a free $10 Bonus Bucks from the SNAP tent to spend at the Market.
Thirty-six local farmers/producers will bring Fairy Tale and Japanese eggplants, garlic, onions, scallions, Zephyr and summer squashes, sweet corn, new potatoes, green peppers, cherry and slicer tomatoes, Asian pears, figs, cantaloupes, watermelons, honeydew melons, Canary melons, peaches, plums, nectarines, green beans, kale, radishes, rainbow chard, arugula, oysters, live crabs, hand-picked crab meat, crabcakes, grass-fed chicken, turkey, duck, beef, pork, honey, jams, mushrooms, freshly laid eggs, A-2 milk, yogurt, butter, ice cream treats, locally roasted coffee and coffee drinks, kombucha, cold-pressed juices, fresh-baked breads, cakes, cookies, pies, and pastries—including vegan and gluten-free selections—made with fruit from vendors at the Market, herb, veggie, and flower plants, fresh-cut herbs, cut-flower bouquets including zinnias, sunflowers, and much more.
The HLFM is unique in that it is producer-only—customers connect directly with the farmer who grew the produce and raised the animals to buy their local fruit, veggies, eggs, dairy, and meats. This Market is where the farmers are—the most farmers in any farmers market in the Delmarva!
Please note that dogs and other pets (except for service animals) are not permitted inside the Market. This is to ensure the safety of customers, vendors, and volunteers. Customers may still walk their dogs around the other paths and parts of George H.P. Smith Park but may not bring them inside the Market area.
The very popular Children’s Storytime at the Market starts at 10am under the yellow tent with volunteers reading books about farming, gardening, and healthy eating. All children and their adults are welcome. Thanks to Heirloom Restaurant for sponsoring this program.
The HLFM Big Raffle continues with the fan-favorite prizes: the Fabu-Lewes-Feast including 12 $100 restaurant gift cards and a Private-in-Home 3-Course Chef with Wine Pairing for 10 by Lewes Oyster House’s Chef Sean Corea. Tickets are on sale at the Market, and the drawing is August 31st.
The HLFM website www.historiclewesfarmersmarket.org lists all vendors, their contact information, and whether or not they take pre-orders. For pre-orders, the customer may pick up at the vendor tent in the Market.
The Market’s weekly newsletter lists demos and more. To receive the newsletter customers should email info@historiclewesfarmersmarket.org and ask to be added to the list.
The Market accepts SNAP, WIC, and SFMNP benefits, and continues to match SNAP up to $20 per market, per customer. Please go to the SNAP tent to process SNAP/EBT.
The HLFM continues its Food Pantry Purchase Program. HLFM customers who want to help feed the local community may purchase local produce, meats, milk, and other food from growers at the Market to donate to this program every Saturday. At the end of the Market, the produce and other foods are gathered and given to food pantries including Epworth and Casa San Francisco. The HLFM thanks its customers for their generosity.
Parking is limited, so customers should walk or bike to the Market if they are able. The circle in front of the Fred Thomas Building at the foot of Dupont will be open for accessible drop-off and pick-up, with some spots available for accessible parking only. With the addition of new sidewalks to George H.P. Smith Park, the best place to park is in the main parking lot at the Lewes Elementary School (where the Market moves if it rains) at 820 Savannah Road. The HLFM asks customers to please drive carefully when parking for the Market and always watch for children, walkers, and bikers.
In case of inclement weather, the Market moves to the Lewes Elementary School parking lot, 820 Savannah Road.
The HLFM Wednesday Market at Crooked Hammock Brewery is open from 8 to 11:30 am through September 4th. Wednesday Market vendors include Bennett Orchards, Cosmic Dog Farm, Davidson’s Exotic Mushrooms, Dittmar Family Farms, Dream Catcher Homestead, Kalmar Farm, Mayhems Confections, Old World Breads, the Point Coffee House and Bakery, Shady Meadow Farms, Stag Run Farm, and Summer Moments Floral. The HLFM thanks Crooked Hammock Brewery for sponsoring the Wednesday Market.
The HLFM thanks The Lee Ann Wilkinson Group, 2024 HLFM Market Champion, for their continued support of the Market. It also thanks all of the 2024 Market Sponsors!
