Every month The Lewes Historical Society welcomes locals and visitors alike to our Historic First Fridays. The Sussex Tavern comes alive as history interpreters dressed in period garb share fascinating tales and ales from the past. Visit the Lewistown Coffee house for a taste of the Revelation, browse the Historic Lewes Antique Shop, listen to music, take a tour, all in the beautiful setting of our Historic Shipcarpenter Street Campus.
Admission to the LHS Campus and its historic structures is FREE on First Fridays! ! Friday’s weather is 65 degrees and sunny! !
At First Friday around the fire pit, you can learn about our exciting history from staff sharing tall tales at 4:30, 5:30 and 6:30 pm.
To keep the operation of Sussex Tavern consistent with what was known about the drinking habits of the period, historical interpreters at Historic Lewes developed recipes for the various libations on offer, beginning with the most popular – grog. This is not unlike what seamen would have drunk while aboard their ships: a mixture of rum, sugar and lime juice (to help prevent scurvy).

Period music is played in the Sussex Tavern dining room by Forbes Road Frolic from Philidelphia. They represent colonial-era tavern musicians, performing instrumental and vocal music that has been documented to the 18th century.
