The Overfalls Foundation needs energetic volunteers to help with all that goes into keeping an all-volunteer, small nonprofit, “afloat.” No prior knowledge of ships is necessary.
The Overfalls Foundation is a fun, community-oriented organization. The mission of the Foundation is to preserve and manage the Lightship Overfalls, the big red ship docked in Lewes, and to educate people about the lightship service and the maritime history of our community. Volunteers are needed to help with tours, the welcome center and Museum store, ship maintenance, communication, outreach, fundraising, event planning and advertising.
To introduce potential volunteers to the Overfalls Foundation facilities and these volunteer opportunities, an information session is set for Thursday, April 11, from 6-8PM at the Virden Center (out by the Windmill) 1155 College Drive, Lewes. A light dinner will be served. Please RSVP to Ted Hack at volunteering@overfalls.org if you’d like attend!
Overfalls was first launched in 1938. She served continuously as a floating lighthouse until 1972 when she was decommissioned by the Coast Guard. The Coast Guard donated her to Lewes in 1973 where she became a floating museum. She was designated a National Historic Landmark in 2011.
