On June 10 1942, German U-boat U-373 laid a series of 15 mines across the entrance to the Delaware Bay just east of Fort Miles. This mine field resulted in the sinking of the tug boat John R. Williams with the loss of 14 local lives. Using both US and German records, this presentation will discuss if and how the US defenses at Fort Miles along with the US Coast Guard and Navy reacted to this threat and how U-373 survived the execution of this risky operation.
