Soup Season at the HLFM Saturday Market
This Saturday, customers at the Historic Lewes Farmers Market can celebrate the season change with fresh, seasonal soups! Jackie Blues will have Cream O’ Crab, Veggie Crab, and Veggie Cream O’ Crab soup, Old World Breads will have Manhattan Clam Chowder, Cream of Mushroom, Sweet Potato Bisque, Thai Lentil, Sausage Corn Chowder, Cream of Tomato, and Chicken Noodle soups, and Mahon River Farm will have fresh, homemade chicken bone broth. Customers can sample a Mushroom Chili with a recipe card to take home and try themselves from Davidson’s Exotic Mushrooms. There will also be various vegan and/or gluten-free soup options: Weathered Eye Farm will bring Tuscan Butter Bean Stew and a Creamy Carrot Tomato soup, and Kahiau’s Bakery will have Split Pea Soup, Pasta Fazool, and Pumpkin Chili. Many other Market farmers will have special soup ingredients for those customers looking to make their own favorite recipes, just bring your shopping list!
Thirty-three farmers/producers will bring pumpkins, apples and apple cider, varieties of winter squashes, wax beans, Dragon Tongue beans, gold and red potatoes, beets, radishes, Fairy Tale and Japanese eggplant, fresh ginger, garlic, spring onions, figs, plums, pears, as well as cherry and slicer tomatoes, lettuce, arugula, kale, broccoli, stir-fry mix, cucumbers, peppers, paw paws, oysters, live crabs, hand-picked crab meat, crab cakes, honey, jams, mushrooms, chicken, beef, pork, turkey, duck, lamb, freshly laid eggs, locally roasted coffee and coffee drinks, kombucha, cold-pressed juices, fresh-baked breads, cakes, cookies, pies, apple cider donuts, and pastries—including vegan and gluten-free selections—made with fruit from vendors at the Market, herb, veggie, and flower plants, fresh-cut herbs, beautiful cut-flower bouquets, and much more.
The HLFM is unique in that it is producer-only—customers connect directly with the farmer who grew the produce and raised the animals to buy their local fruit, veggies, eggs, dairy, and meats. This Market is where the farmers are—the most farmers in any farmers market in the Delmarva!
The HLFM Summer Saturday Market continues through September 28th at George H.P. Smith Park from 8am to noon. On September 28, the HLFM hosts a very special History Book Festival event at the Market. At the demo tent at 10am, Michelle King, the author of Chop Fry Watch Learn: Fu Pei-mei and the Making of Modern Chinese Food, will team up with Bodhi Kitchen to demonstrate how home cooks can integrate the wonderful, fresh Asian ingredients available through local farms into their everyday meals.
Please note that dogs and other pets (except for service animals) are not permitted inside the Market. This is to ensure the safety of customers, vendors, and volunteers. Customers may still walk their dogs around the other paths and parts of George H.P. Smith Park but may not bring them inside the Market area.
The HLFM website www.historiclewesfarmersmarket.org lists all vendors, their contact information, and whether or not they take pre-orders. For pre-orders, the customer may pick up at the vendor tent in the Market.
The Market’s weekly newsletter lists what each vendor is bringing to Market, demos and more. To receive the newsletter customers should email info@historiclewesfarmersmarket.org and ask to be added to the list.
The Market accepts SNAP, WIC, and SFMNP benefits, and continues to match SNAP up to $20 per market, per customer. Please go to the SNAP tent to process SNAP/EBT.
The HLFM continues its Food Pantry Purchase Program. HLFM customers who want to help feed the local community may purchase local produce, meats, milk, and other food from growers at the Market to donate to this program every Saturday. At the end of the Market, the produce and other foods are gathered and given to food pantries including Epworth and Casa San Francisco. The HLFM thanks its customers for their generosity.
Parking is limited, so customers should walk or bike to the Market if they are able. The circle in front of the Fred Thomas Building at the foot of Dupont will be open for accessible drop-off and pick-up, with some spots available for accessible parking only. With the addition of new sidewalks to George H.P. Smith Park, the best place to park is in the main parking lot at the Lewes Elementary School (where the Market moves if it rains) at 820 Savannah Road. The HLFM asks customers to please drive carefully when parking for the Market and always watch for children, walkers, and bikers.
In case of inclement weather, the Market moves to the Lewes Elementary School parking lot, 820 Savannah Road.
The HLFM Fall Saturday Market will be open 9am to noon from October 5th through November 23rd at the Lewes Elementary School parking lot. The Fall Market celebrates the season with Apple Celebration Day, Jazz Fest, Beebe Healthcare Day, a spooky Halloween Market, Customer Appreciation Day, special Food Drives, and more!
The HLFM thanks The Lee Ann Wilkinson Group, 2024 HLFM Market Champion, for their continued support of the Market. It also thanks all of the 2024 Market Sponsors.
