What’s Fresh at the Historic Lewes Farmers Market:

It’s Mater Madness this Saturday at the Historic Lewes Farmers Market. The Market is celebrating its favorite fruit to kick off National Farmers Market Week, August 4-10. In addition to every variety of tomato imaginable, vendors will be bringing special Tomato Festival items:

Old World Breads: Heirloom Tomato Flatbread using Stag Run Farm’s heirlooms on rosemary focaccia, Gazpacho using Fifer’s tomatoes and Country Tomato Bread—a Tomato Festival special of country sourdough bread with sundried tomato pesto.

Gather Alfajores: tomato sandwiches on sesame and Henlopen Sea Salt buttermilk biscuits with roasted garlic aioli, Fox Briar Farm heirloom tomatoes, and black pepper.

Derby Mill Farm: DIY tomato and herb sauce kits

Bennett Orchards: a recipe for Nectarine Caprese Salad

At the Market you can also find American, Italian, and Japanese eggplants, figs, cherries, cantaloupes, watermelons, peaches, plums, nectarines, sweet corn, potatoes—various colors, green beans, summer squashes, kale, Bok Choy, Chinese cabbage, radishes, Swiss chard, arugula, pork sausages, chops, and ribs, oysters, live crabs, hand-picked crab meat, crabcakes, grass-fed chicken, turkey, duck, beef, honey, jams, mushrooms, freshly laid eggs, ice cream treats, locally roasted coffee and coffee drinks, kombucha, cold-pressed juices, fresh-baked breads, cakes, cookies, pies, and pastries—including vegan and gluten-free selections—made with fruit from vendors at the Market, herb, veggie, and flower plants, fresh-cut herbs, cut-flower bouquets including zinnias, sunflowers, and much more.

Kindle Executive Chef and Owner Ian Crandall, along with his Sous Chef Dan Redd, will be demonstrating 3 tomato preparations at the Demo tent at 10 am. Using tomatoes, herbs, and other ingredients from around the Market, they will be presenting a no-cook tomato sauce, served with chevre over fresh flatbread, a tomato carpaccio with arugula and a tangy caper dressing, and a freshly squeezed tomato mocktail.

The HLFM is unique in that it is producer-only—customers connect directly with the farmer who grew the produce and raised the animals to buy their local fruit, veggies, eggs, dairy, and meats. This Market is where the farmers are—the most farmers in any farmers market in the Delmarva!
